1) Flash TWRP from GizBeat or NeedROM, see (drivers SP Flash Tool for MTK, how-to):
http://www.gizbeat.com/10733/ule ... ulefone-metal-root/
http://forum.ulefone.com/thread-268-1-1.html

2) Boot to TWRP, wipe Cash and Dalwik Cache, stay in TWRP and install four ZIPs in a queue (in that order)
SuperSU-v2.78-SR1.zip
2a) AdAway_systemless_hosts_v2.zip
2c) xposed-v86-sdk23-arm64.zip and grorkmod_v1.1+lite.zip

3) Boot to System, it will take few minutes and it will ask for WiFi, Google Account, etc

4) Run SuperSU as installed in step (2), it's the latest version, no update is needed
4a) Install org.adaway_3.1.2.apk, run AdAway and configure for automatic updates over WiFi.
4b) Install  busybox x   from Google Play, run and enable.
4c) Install XposedInstaller_3.0_alpha4.apk., it must show that Xposed fraework is active, see a screenshot above.

5) Reboot
5b) Install ViPERFX_v2.5.0.5.apk, run and configure, see
http://forum.ulefone.com/thread-304-1-2.html
5c) Run XposedInstaller from (4c) and download, install and activate your Xposed modules, e.g YouTube_Background_Playback.apk.

6) Settings / Security / Autostart: Make sure that SuperSU, AdAway, V4A and Xposed modules are allowed to autostart. Once all Xposed modules are installed, configured and tested, you can dissallow Xposed Installer from autostarting.
Reboot and enjoy.

For the list of useful Xposed modules, see my post #10 below.

Optional components and dependencies:
AdAway: (2a), (4a)
BusyBox: (4b)
V4A: (4b), (5b)
Xposed: (2c), (4c), (5c)

This is Systemless root, with SELinux in Enforcing mode.

Procedure can be applied to the stock Jul/27 ROM, Russlan"s Sep/12 ROM or Ulefone's updates Oct/19 or Oct/24 ROMs (all available e.g. on NeedROM). There are no essential differences, except that Jul/27 stock ROM came with (malwares) Search Service and Opera Mobile Store, but once it"s rooted you can easily quarantine or uninstall the two services.

Ulefone's ROM is based on (plain) AOSP Adroid 6, with TWRP and root (and BusyBox and Xposed), sky and tweaks by XDA hackers are your only limits. E.g., don"t expect audio quality and audio enhancements from Ulefone (or even two times more expensive brands), comparable to V4A.

---

All ZIPs and APKs (those not available from Google Play) can be downloaded from my Google Drive:
https://drive.google.com/folderv ... Mne5ank2eUpCMjRDYmc
At the moment they are the latest versions, original download URLs can be found on the corresponding XDA development forum topics.

Useful apps from Google Play for the rooted phone
- Root Checker Pro Free
- Quick Reboot
- ES File Explorer (enable Root and Hidden Files)
- Quarantine, Link2SD or Titanium Backup (partially overlapping features)
- Hibernation Manager
- Terminal Emulator
- Kernel Adiutor
- BuildProp Editor

Be cautious, keep a back-up (through TWRP and/or Titanium) of the last good configuration, to easily restore if thigs go wrong.

Hey @zgfg. Great guide, thanks.

What are the differences between Jul/27 Ulefone ROM and Oct/19 Ulefone ROM?
Is it safe to flash the Oct/19 over my rooted Jul/27 ROM?

Thanks, I'll check out Xposed.

I got the OTA update and now I have lost root. However, my phone is not recognised on Win10 by SP Flash Tool. I get an INF driver error. Any ideas?

If root is lost upon OTA update, boot to TWRP and install SuperSU ZIP again.
If AdAway not working (upon you restore root), open AdAway, give it root privileges, update and enable it manually, and make sure Settings/ Security / Startup Management allows AdAway to auto-start at boot.

If Xposed does no more work, uninstall Xposed modules and then uninstall Xposed Installer.  Boot to TWRP, clean Cache and Dalvik Cache,, then install from TWRP xposed-v86-sdk23-arm64.zip and grorkmod_v1.1+lite.zip.,  reboot and install/configure Xposed Installer as described in the HowTo above,  see steps (2c), (4c), (5c). Install again your Xposed modules. Maybe you could skip some steps, you can try, but this way it will work again for sure.

If V4A does not work anymore, uninstall it, and uninstall BusyBox. Boot to TWRP, clean Cache and Dalvik Cache,, reboo and install BusyBox and V4A as described in the HowTo above, steps (4b) and (5b).

Did you every try before the update? Windows 10 blocks installation of unsigned drivers. You have to go into settings, update and security, advanced start up and reboot and then when it boots choose the option to disable requirement of signed drivers. Then you can install the drivers until you reboot again. Then install the MTK driver package.

1) Flash TWRP from GizBeat or NeedROM, see (drivers SP Flash Tool for MTK, how-to):
http://www.gizbe ...

For the updated procedure on installing TWRP, root and Xposed (as well as optional AdAway, BusyBox and Viper4Android), see post #2 above.

List of useful Xposed modules:

YouTube Playback: YouTube to play in background, or even with the locked screen. Sunce a recenziju YT udate, YT Playback stopped working (can't keep running YT in the background. However, instalirati the latest beta/experimental YT Playback v200, it Works fine again.
YouTube AdAway: To block YouTube ads

GravityBox [MM]: In background, long press on Volume Up and Down buttons to navigate to the next or previous songs. For WiFi networks, to prioritize the list and to define which of them are enabled for SmartLock.
Also, for Phone app, to start directly from dialer, and for ascending ringing.
Ulefone Power: In lieu of missing Notifications LED, Home button backlight to notify on missed calls and messages (test please). Not applicable to Ulefone Metal, it has no backlight either.

For particular Xposed module to work, it must be installed and activated from XposedInstaller / Modules. Modules must be allowed to autostart (Settings / Security / Autostart). Upon installation of a module, phone must be rebooted (you can install several modules at once and then reboot).

To prevent boot failures by GravityBox clashing with launcher and native Settings, install GravityBox bot disallow it from autostart. Reboot, open GravityBox and configure+test a tweak by tweak. When everything is Ok, allow GravityBox to autostart (and test with a final reboot).

---

Whenever available, choose MM = Marshmallow modules. List of all Xposed modules can be found at:
